About the Item

Two wonderful oil on canvas paintings of Maenads, inspired by frescoes unearthed at Pompeii in the late 18th century. Both shown suspended in air holding instruments in flowing drapery. Signed A. G. Ambrosio. Framed and matted in gilt wood. A Maenad is a female follower of Bacchus, traditionally associated with divine possession and frenzied rites.
