Pastel Drawing, Self-Portrait as a Middle-Aged Man by Delphin Enjolras, 1899

About the Item

This drawing is a three-quarter-portrait of the artist at a middle age. He wears a contemporary black suit with a white shirt and a dark blue bow tie. His characteristic hairline is already retreating and he has some crow’s feet on his temples. His eyes are relaxed and he looks past the spectator. His beard is styled in the typical fashion of the time. The artist drew the tiniest hairs and wrinkles in a very sophisticated, artful way; the materiality of the suit is very skillfully depicted. The background is blurry. There are trees as well as architectural elements that suggest a park, but they are penciled in an impressionistic, colorful manner. The drawing is framed in a golden stucco frame, signed “D. Enjolras”, and dated 1899 in the top right corner. The French artist Delphin Enjolras (born 1857 in Courcouron, France, died 1945) started to paint landscapes at first, after he became student under Jean Leon Gerome, Pascal Dagnan-Bouveret, and G.C.E. Courtois in Paris. Between 1889 and 1909, he had exhibitons at the Société des Artistes Francais. Later on he took to the subject of young, beautiful women by candlelight doing domestic work. This self-portrait is thusly an exception in his oeuvre. The only other known self-portrait is from 1921 and was painted on a color-palette at a much older age and was up for auction at Christie’s New York in 1993. This self-portrait shows him at the age of about 42 years. His skillful handling of pastel chalk can also be observed in this picture. The intense contrast between the sharp foreground and the blurry background leaves room for interpretation. In the context of a self-portrait of an artist who, at the time, was interested in painting landscapes, the background could have been used attributively. He shows all his skills in one drawing and depicts himself in a fitting surrounding of a landscape painter. He was exhibiting at the Société des Artistes Francais at the time and could have promoted his own abilities with this drawing to the public. With French certificate of authenticity.
