Portrait of Literate, Giuseppe Bezzuoli Oil on Canvans Poet Writer, 19th Century
Giuseppe Bezzuoli (Firenze 1784 - Firenze 1855) Portrait perhaps Poet or Writer Provenance: Important Roman collection Not signed He was a painter of historical subjects, he executed frescoes for villas and palaces and many portraits. He preferred the romantic themes, but he did not move away from the academic canons and always despised the pictorial current of Realism, which in Italy asserted itself mainly through the phenomenon of the Macchiaioli. It was not by chance that Giovanni Fattori (1825-1908), who was to become one of the most famous Macchiaioli, was little esteemed by one of his last disciples. He taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence and was a professor of painting in 1844, succeeding his master Pietro Benvenuti, who, in Fiesole, had his villa built, Villa Benvenuti. He had pupils who later became famous: not only the little appreciated Giovanni Fattori, but also Antonio Ciseri, Luigi Mussini, Carlo Ademollo, Annibale Gatti, and Silvestro Lega. Among his works is the portrait of Leopold II of Lorraine, Grand Duke of Tuscany (1797-1870), painted in the habit of a knight of Santo Stefano; The Grand Duchess Maria Antonietta (1836), wife of Leopold II, painting which is located at the Galleria d'Arte Moderna (Florence), where is also the entrance of Charles VIII in Florence, from the door of San Frediano on 17 November 1494 (painting of 1827). In the church of San Remigio in Florence there is an altarpiece on an altar San Remigio baptizing King Clovis (1821). Bezzuoli also painted the fresco by Galileo Galilei (1564-1642), entitled Galileo Galilei, which carries out the experiment of falling bodies for the Tribune of Galileo, in the Museo La Specola (Physics and Natural History). Various sketches by Bezzuoli are in the Gallery of Modern Art. To the Bezzuoli belonged the villa that bears his name, Villa Bezzuoli, located in Fiesole. The artist is buried in the Basilica of San Miniato al Monte, in Florence. The measurement shown is of the painting without frame. Italian Fine Arts Authority must check this item in order to allow its exportation. This process lasts about 60 days.
