Marcello Boccacci Natura Morta ‘1914-1996’ Still Life with Woman Painting

About the Item

Oil painting on board. Boccacci was a contemporary of Morandi and was a proponent of Natura Morta (still life painting) and portrait painting, circa 1950. Boccacci has rendered a Chagallesque floating female figure with a still life with bottle and what looks like a basket of fruit. Signed lower left. Very tight crazing of paint and some very minor losses. Framing treatment consists of simple wood frame with linen liner and a gold filet The painting measures 5" wide x 10.5" high.

    Ramon Prats (1928-2003) vase and jug still life oil paint on masonite. Circa 1971. Signed and dated lower right, Prats, '71. A peaceful rendering and reminiscent of Morandi's solitary still life paintings. Prats' stippling effect with the brush or palette knife has created a beautifully tactile and textured painting. Light and dark contrast of the violet cylinder next to the curvaceous jug. A wonderful piece. the framing treatment consists of a simple flat black wood profile molding. The piece is in good overall condition with minor losses around the corners and edges of the work. No other major paint losses. No visible crazing, water damage or restorations. Some scuffs, dings and losses to the black frame. Wear consistent with age. Approximate overall dimensions with frame are 1.5" deep x 16" wide x 24.75" high. The approximate measurements of the actual work on masonite are 15.63" wide x 24.25" high. After his studies in Cuba, Prats moved to New York where he studied at the Art Students League of New York. He regularly exhibited at the Associated American Artists (AAA) Gallery until 1955 and also at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Prats moved to Mexico in 1956 and was pivotal in spearheading the development of modern art there until his death at age 74. Biography from Cooper-Hewitt Design Museum Ramon Prats (American, b. Spain, 1928-2003) developed his talent for painting while he was a child. At age 15, he was appointed the official artist and illustrator for El País newspaper in Havana, Cuba, where his family lived at the time.
