"Salome, " Important Art Deco Painting by Dunbar Beck, WPA Muralist
About the Item
Depicting a Salome who is both ravishing and terrifying, with her auburn tresses rising up as if on fire, this remarkable work was painted by Dunbar Beck, famed for his WPA and New York World's Fair murals. Here Beck captures the female nude in all its beauty, and yet it is a terrible beauty, given that Salome is regarding the head of John the Baptist, her hands framed in sharpened talons like a modern-day Gorgon. Beck worked in New York for many years, and later moved to Sacramento, California, where he died. Though never framed, the dimensions indicated here encompass the area that was meant to be seen, according to pencil marks by the artist.
