Large Antique Oil on Canvas Painting of Christ on the Cross in Ebonized Frame

About the Item

Marvellous work of religious art. This striking and sizeable painting of Christ on the cross is an impressive sight to see and for more reasons than one. The incredibly well painted, pale body of Christ contrasting strongly against the dark and ominous looking background makes Christ, in His agonizing position, look even more vulnerable. We feel that this is what this larger than average painting is about, because, looking at the face of Christ, the painter has chosen to portray Jesus in His moment of deepest dispair. It seems to be the moment when He calls out "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?". With that the artist may be showing us that we can all lose hope/faith sometimes, but we should try to never give up. Then, in the centre of this vulnerable painting of Christ, there is one of the best painted loincloths you will ever find (see image 4). In that same fragment you can also witness the incredible beauty of the anatomical details in the belly and upper legs of Christ. For a painting to portray such agony on the one hand, combined with such incredible softness and beauty on the other, to us, makes it very powerful and a true work of art. Light and dark are very much present in this painting and, except for nightfall, the darkness in the back may also represent what will happen (and may already have happened) to life on earth when this is how we treat those who are truthful and who bring light. Prior to shipping, the excellent condition, ebonized wooden frame with the golden banding will be strengthened in the corners so it will again be as strong as it was when it was first handcrafted. Mind you, our fair price for this impressive and sizable antique painting with its original wooden frame includes perfect packing (in a custom made crate) and also worldwide delivery from our store to your door in just 4 days. Maximum height x width x depth (including the frame) 51.4 x 39 x 1.57 inches. Height x width x depth of the painting only 41.7 x 30.1 x 0.79 inches. We have a passion for the unique, for quality, for artistic and meaningful and for craftsmanship of years gone by. Your purchases will be extremely well packaged and we look forward to serving you (again). You can shop all our 1000+ listings by pushing the button that reads 'View All From Seller'.

17th century Christ in chains Oil on canvas, 95 x 71 cm Frame 110 x 84 cm The figurative tradition representing Christ with chained hands can be traced back to the early Middle Ages, when an iconography of His pains spread widely. The need to translate the Passion into images aimed to raise awareness of the forgiveness that has occurred for all men, consequent to the Crucifixion. This painting depicts the moment before the audience before Pilate. Christ has not yet been cruelly mocked by the soldiers, despite the fact that he is already wearing the crown of thorns and the purple...
