Rococo Paintings

ROCOCO STYLE

Rococo was an aesthetic movement in the fine and decorative arts in the 18th century that found its inspiration in nature and fostered an overall lightness and delicacy of form, construction and ornament in interior design. Rococo furniture, while greatly influenced by trends in Italy and Germany, is often called Louis XV style — the movement having reached its best expression during that sybaritic French king’s reign.

The term “rococo” is thought to be a portmanteau of the French words rocaille and coquilles — “rock” and “shells” — organic motifs frequently used in architecture and design of the style.

When it comes to authentic Rococo furniture's characteristics, it is above all sensuous and social. The furniture of earlier eras in Europe had been heavy in every sense; the Rococo period saw the appearance of light-framed upholstered armchairs, side chairs and occasional tables that could easily be moved to form conversational circles.

The signal detail of Rococo furniture design is the gently curved cabriole, or S-shaped chair-, table-, and cabinet-leg. It imitates the bend of a tree limb or a flower stem. In a further reference to nature, furnishings were often asymmetrical and painted white, or in soft, pastel shades. Rococo has become a timeless style, and as the furniture pieces presented on 1stDibs demonstrate, its playful, sculptural forms can provide visual excitement to contemporary, clean-lined spaces.

19th Century French Oil on Canvas Allegoric Blue and White Painting with Cherub
Located in Firenze, IT
This lovely French 19th century oil painting on square canvas has a sky blue background, a fluffy cloud fills the central part of the painting where a woman is lying down playing the lyre, while a graceful cherub seems to twirl over her. This oil on canvas painting represents the allegory of music - with a woman dressed in classical clothes and a putto- a very popular theme during all the neoclassical age, with its lively scene inspired by the Rococo period. The composition creates a awesome trompe-l'œil effect thanks to the color palette scheme. Well painted white and gray shadings (chiaro scuro) that stands out from the light blue background. This painting originally was an over door frieze...

By William Raymond Dommersen 1
Located in London, GB
This is a beautiful oil on canvas painting of the view of the Ducal Palace and the entrance to the Piazza San Marco Canal in Venice by the renowned William Raymond Dommersen (1850 - 1927), signed lower right. William Raymond Dommersen came from a famous family of Dutch artists who moved to England in the 1860’s and changed the family name from Dommershuizen. He was the son of Peter Cornelis Dommersen and travelled around Europe and England painting marine and town scenes. His works are still very popular and many have been reproduced in print, his originals, not surprisingly, are very much sought after. This beautiful landscape captures a striking view across the canal. It features a busy canal scene with sailing boats and gondoliers in the foreground, in the distance the facades the spiralling tower of the San Marco Campanile complete the painting. Housed in it's original and beautiful gilt gallery frame. Several examples of his work have sold at top auction...
