Successor of Jens Juel, Portrait of Merchant Poul Johan Schouw, 1850s

Successor of Jens Juel - Portrait of Merchant Poul Johan Schouw, 1850s. Oil on canvas. The person portrayed is the Danish merchant Poul Johan Schouw (1747-1808), born in Copenhagen. From 1755-1845, Denmark owned the East Indian city of Serampore (Danish name: Frederiknagore; located in today's state of West Bengal), a colony in India, which was mainly controlled by Great Britain. Schouw gained a good reputation as a successful colonial merchant specializing in spices, tea and food. The artist of this work referred in his design to a model of the important Danish artist and royal court painter Jens Jørgensen Juel. Juel was born in 1745 in the small village of Balslev on Funen. Already as a teenager he showed such great talent for painting that his family sent him to Hamburg to Johann Michael Gehrman for an apprenticeship. Gehrman was an important and successful artist, with whom Juel was able to expand his skills. Juel specialized in landscape paintings, portraits and genre scenes. At the age of almost 20 he moved to Copenhagen to study at the renowned Royal Danish Academy of Arts. In 1771 he received an award for the depiction of a Bible scene. Juel studied in Rome with the painter Nicolai Abildgaard (1743-1809), with whom he had a lifelong friendship. Further stays in Paris and Geneva followed. In 1780 Juel became royal court painter in Copenhagen and professor at the academy there in 1786. His pupils included Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840) and Philipp Otto Runge (1777-1810), the most important German artists of early Romanticism. Juel died in Copenhagen in 1802. He was by far the most influential portrait painter in Denmark and known far beyond the borders of the country. Among those portrayed by him are King Christian VII of Denmark and Norway, the physician, enlightener and politician Johann Friedrich Struensee, the writer Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock, the merchant and shipowner Niels Ryberg and many other high-ranking personalities of the Danish nobility and Danish society. Jens Juel is considered, along with Nicolai Abildgaard, to be the most important Danish painter of the late 18th century. His works can be found in the Kunsthalle Hamburg, the National Gallery in London, the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Danish National Museum in Copenhagen, the Kunsthalle Kiel and other museums and castles.
