"Ten Nudes Dancing, " Large Art Deco-Surrealist Painting by Bond, 1940s
About the Item
Clearly showing the influence of modern dance, William Blake and early 19th century Classicism, Art Deco stylization and Surrealism, this remarkable, brilliantly hued painting by Milton Bond depicts 10 nudes in various dance moves and positions. Bond was unafraid of depicting the full male nude as well as the female, and painted a series of scenes with multiple figures that were exhibited at the Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester, New York. Bond was an important painter who worked for the Munsell Color Company and developed a system to describe colors on a scientific scale. Later he taught at the Rochester Institute of Technology, and became fascinated with carborundum crystals, introducing them in a stylized, vividly-colored form to his paintings. This painting is oil on canvas.
