"Untitled" 20th Century Ron Hoover Oil on Translucent Paper

About

Ron Hoover (1944-2008) painted subject matter that was important to him and made a statement of his social consciousness. This painting is possibly depicting a man whose luck has moved him to the streets. The viewer feels the terror of the man that seems to be cloaked in his shadow. Dark wood frame cream matte. Hoover's paintings and drawings depicted real-estate developers, football players, bureaucrats and politicians offer a rogue’s gallery of American greed, violence and conformism. His art came directly from his personal experiences, alternative newspapers and public radio. Hoover improvised new means of getting paint onto his canvases, sometimes flicking it from toothbrushes or the tips of his fingers, other times spinning it from electric drills. (He also used conventional brushes.) After an interesting excursion into all-over abstraction in the late 1970s, Hoover stayed with figuration, although his faceless functionaries and pointy-headed salesmen are sometimes barely legible. Solo exhibitions included the Station Museum, Art Car Museum, and the Arlington Museum of Art.
