Very rare triptych of the 18th century, follower of François Boucher. Our impressively-sized paintings come from a private collection of a famous French family (Marnier Lapostolle). Its display in a monumental entrance reflects the good taste of the great French families. French School of the 18th century. Virginia Bacon. 1916: Frick. Legacy Henry Clay Frick. This suite composed of 3 paintings can be dated circa 1780-1790. Adorned with sumptuous frames with their original gilding. As a particularly prolific master, Boucher tackled all genres: religious paintings, mythological themes, rustic scenes, landscapes, animals, decorations of monuments and private houses, tapestry models. He is perhaps the most famous painter and decorative artist of the 18th century, said to be one of the purest geniuses. A year before his death, he himself estimated having produced more than ten thousand drawings. And yet he still found the time to work ten hours a day on idyllic and voluptuous representations of classical, mythological, and erotic themes, decorative allegories, and pastoral scenes. He was a painter at the court of Louis XV and the favorite of the Marquise de Pompadour, the latter being the subject of several portraits.
