"View of Vesuvius" 19th century watercolor "View of Vesuvius," painting from the 1800s. Watercolor; 34 x 27 cm Period: 1800 Beyond its geophysical value, Vesuvius has played a really important role in art history over the centuries: painters, watercolorists and engravers of almost every era and nationality have variously interpreted it; among them Italians, French, English, Germans, Austrians, Russians and Danes inspired by the most diverse genres and artistic movements, called "picturesque," "sublime," "heroic," "romantic," "catastrophic," "horrific," and even by 'abstractionism.
