Framed Black and White Photograph Arthur Tress

About the Item

A framed vintage gelatin silver photograph print by American surrealist photographer Arthur Tress (1940-). Entitled "Making Leaves, Cold Spring, New York", the work was created in 1978. The two intertwine forks on bed invoke a strangely erotic American Gothic feel, a typical style of the artist. It was signed by the artist and marked artist proof on the back. The antique silver frame was chosen to compliment the imagery. The image only is 10.5" W x 11' H. With frame is 23" x 23". This image was published in the artist's first retrospective monograph: Arthur Tress: Fantastic Voyage. 2001. Plate 73 on page 132.

  • Arthur Tress (American b. 1940) 'The Voyage' Rare Signed and Numbered Photograph
    By Arthur Tress
    Located in Ft. Lauderdale, FL
Arthur Tress (American b. 1940) 'The Voyage' Gelatin silver print. Image: 15.75 x 15.75 in / 40 x 40 cm. Mat: 23 x 24.5 in / 50 x 62.5 cm. Full Margins. Signed, titled and numbered by the artist recto under image. This is a work by Arthur Tress not often seen. It is one of a large group of his images which features male nudes in various surrealist situations. Arthur Tress: Born in Brooklyn, New York, on November 24, 1940, Arthur Tress began his first camera work as a teenager in the surreal neighborhood of Coney Island where he spent hours exploring the decaying amusement parks. Later, during five years of world travel, mostly in Asia and Africa, he developed an interest in ethnographical photography that eventually led him to his first professional assignment as a U.S. Government photographer recording the endangered folk cultures of Appalachia. Seeing the destructive results of corporate resource extraction, Tress began to use his camera to raise environmental awareness about the economic and human costs of pollution. Focusing on New York City, he began to photograph the neglected fringes of the urban waterfront with a straight documentary approach. This gradually evolved into a more personal mode of “magic realism” combining improvised elements of actual life with stage fantasy that became his hallmark style of directorial fabrication. In the late 1960s Tress was inspired to do a series Based Upon children’s dreams that combined his interests in ritual ceremony, Jungian archetypes, and social allegory. Later bodies of work dealing with the hidden dramas of adult relationships and the reenactments of male homosexual desire evolved from this primarily theatrical approach. Beginning in the early 1980s, Tress began shooting in color, creating room-sized painted sculptural installations out of found medical equipment in an abandoned hospital on New York’s Welfare Island. This led to a smaller scale exploration of narrative still life within a children’s toy theater...

  • English Chesterfield Leather Sofa Lion Paw Feet Properly and Thoroughly Restored
    Located in Chicago, IL
Vintage English Chesterfield sofa that we recently imported from Ireland and promptly handed over to our inhouse Old Plank upholstery department for a proper and thorough restoration. When we use the term restoration, we actually mean conservation with the initial concept of rebuilding the Chesterfield sofa from the inside out, while using as many of the original components as possible and in particular saving as much of the original leather as possible. Our English Chesterfield sofa was disassembled and the coil springs were tied 8-ways by hand. In each area where we had to add padding, our Old Plank upholstery department used horsehair, shredded coco fiber and cotton. Everything is done here old school and maybe it takes longer and the raw materials may cost more, but in the long run the sofa is going to hold its shape, be super comfortable and last for decades. Even the solid brass (bronze optional) lion paw feet we have cast locally for us and are used on our new Old Plank sofas...
