Unframed Photograph available on request. Featured in "Time Without Beginning”, a selection of brand new photographic works by Joanne Fielder. In her first solo show in Los Angeles, Fielder presents two new series, both shot entirely in Norway, a country she has been visiting annually for almost half a decade after a childhood pen-pal and her parents became akin to a second family to the photographer. In many ways, it’s the ongoing presence of her Norwegian cultural and aesthetic connection that has led to much of her most recent imagery. A pervasive gratitude for this gift of continuity is one of the major themes that motivates Fielder’s work. “That overarching feeling is always present for me, even as I struggle through the saddest and most challenging periods,” she says. In her series Through Line, Fielder explores continuity and rediscovery following disruption and loss. “My parents both passed away and we sold my childhood home here in LA all within a brief span. It was such an abrupt and profound loss of everything familiar, that with the physical loss, I lost sight of my through line. In reality, the line was there all along, but it became broken into pieces and took on new forms. I learned that those segments now represent core values. “Through line” represents the continuity we create from within.” Fielder presents Kuon as a complimentary series to Through Line. While continuity exists within, time extends beyond the bounds of anything knowable. Kuon is a Japanese term for ‘time without beginning,’ the eternity of life and all existence. “When we can begin to see our lives as eternal, we begin to understand the limitless interconnectedness of all things. We come to understand that we are bound to everything in the universe. It is the continuity outside of us.” Fielder’s approach to her work is grounded in the traditional photographic processes. “I’m still devoted to the old-fashioned darkroom techniques,” she says. As a student, and later in her own dark room, she learned many of the alternative processes such as gum bichromate, cibachrome and split-toning, that influence her work today. Through Line plays with negative printing and solarization, and Kuon evoking the watercolor tints of gum bichromate. Joanne Fielder was born in Los Angeles in 1953. She currently resides in West Hollywood.
