Versailles 1985, Luigi Ghirri, Chromogenic Photography from Negative/Single Copy

About the Item

Luigi Ghirri (5 January 1943 – 14 February 1992) was an Italian artist and photographer who gained a far-reaching reputation as a pioneer and master of contemporary photography, with particular reference to its relationship between fiction and reality. Ghirri has been the subject of numerous books. His works are held by various museums around the world and have been exhibited in the 2011 Venice Biennale and at MAXXI in Rome. Ghirri was born in Scandiano near Reggio Emilia, Italy, on 5 January 1943. He started his career in the 1970s. Influenced by conceptual art, he created his first two series, Atlante (1973) and Kodachrome (1978), where his cropped images of the landscape were presented with a deadpan, often ironic wit and a continuous anthropological engagement with his surroundings. The compositions and hues of his photographs suggested subtle emotional tones and a meticulously rich way of viewing the world, as well as the role of images within it. Ghirri's work quickly attracted international attention. In 1975 Time-Life included him in its list of the "Discoveries" of its annual Photography Year publication, and he showed at the Photography as Art, Art as Photography exhibition in Kassel. In 1982 he was invited to the photokina in Cologne, where he was acclaimed as one of the twenty most significant photographers of the 20th century for his series Topographie-Iconographie. In 1989 he made a series shot in the studio of painter Giorgio Morandi. He died of a heart attack at the age of 49 in Roncocesi, Province of Reggio Emilia, Italy on 14 February 1992. Authenticity certificate from Luigi Ghirri's Foundation. Printed on matte paper, year of print 1992 in occasion of the show "Luigi Ghirri Versailles" organized from the Italian Culture Institute of Paris for the Mois de la Photo in November 1992 Bibliography Extract: in 1985 Ghirri continues to explore the themes of architecture and landscape. At the invitation of the French Ministry of Culture, he photographs the palace and gardens of Versailles; this series of images marks a clear development toward his mature period. Light and color are essential elements in his interpretation of these sites and are integral to his theoretical reflections. He writes: “Light is the real substance that gives form to my images.... For me, light is the true ‘genius loci.’

Luigi Ghirri: It's Beautiful Here, Isn't It... by Luigi Ghirri. Published by Aperture, NY, 2008. Stated 1st Ed hardcover with dust jacket. Ghirri was an extraordinary photographer, as well as a writer and curator whose career was so rich and varied that it seems like a lesson in the contemporary history of the medium. Although well known in his native Italy, Ghirri does not yet have the international audience his work merits--perhaps because he died so young. This is the first book published on Ghirri in the U.S. It will establish him as the seminal artist he was. Uncannily prescient, Ghirri shared the sensibility of what became known in the U.S. as the New Color and the New Topographics...
