Located 140 miles east of Los Angeles and 50 miles northwest of Palm Springs, Joshua Tree National Park occupies 792,000 acres and is visited by nearly 3 million people annually. The overall area of the park straddles parts of the lower Colorado Desert and the higher Mojave Desert. The area was established as a national monument on August 10, 1936 by President Franklin Roosevelt and was re-designated as a National Park in 1994 by President Bill Clinton. Spring and Fall are the most popular times to visit Joshua Tree National Park as summers there see scorching hot daytime temperatures and chilly temperatures in Winter keep many visitors away. Snow within the park is extremely rare and intervals between occurrences may be several years. When it does snow, it usually melts within a few hours or a day. The photograph of this abandoned and rusted truck was taken on New Years Day of 2014 after a freak winter storm hit the area. All markings and serial numbers have been removed from the truck so the year and manufacturer are uncertain. Park rangers believe it to be a truck from the late 1920s or early 1930s and because of the headlights surmise it is a Dodge.
