Ray Charles, North Sea Jazz Festival, the Hague, Limited Edition

About the Item

Ray Charles at The North Sea Jazz Festival, The Hague. Very large, high resolution, signed and numbered print, made from the original negative on archival quality, acid free paper. This process is supervised, numbered and signed by the artist, along with signed “Certificate of Authenticity” with matching edition number and complimentary copy of "The Man Who Used Jazz For Justice". This acclaimed biography will be signed and dedicated, if so desired. These prints are made in 2020, using a negative from 1990. Petersen Antiques and 1stDibs have exclusive rights to this historic series of photographs by Photographer Tad Hershorn. They can not be purchased anywhere else! As the friend and authorized biographer to the legendary Norman Granz (founder of Verve Records, the music label that turned these great artists into superstars), Tad Hershorn had the opportunity to shoot these pictures. While interviewing Granz and collecting material for the Biography,. "The Man Who Used Jazz for Justice", Hershorn frequently travelled with Granz and the artists allowing him intimate access to them! In the late 1940s, Ray Charles Robinson was entranced (as many were) by the jazz pianist and silky vocals of Nat Cole. That lasted until Atlantic Records president Ahmet Ertegun challenged him to find his own voice. The only way to describe the post of gold at the end of the rainbow is “Ray Charles Music”: his blend of rhythm and blues and gospel at first scandalized more traditional African American audiences; Country/Western a stretch except that it wasn’t; pop and jazz. His version of “America the Beautiful” is definitive, and his home state of Georgia adopted his rendition of “Georgia on My Mind” as the state song. At the time of his death in 2004, Ray Charles had long since become one with the American landscape. In support of the Black Lives Matter movement a portion of the proceeds from the sale of this series will be donated to Social Justice Learning Institute in LA.
