Theodore Roosevelt in Yosemite Large Historic Signed Photograph

Theodore Roosevelt In Yosemite - The Birth Of The Conservation Movement. Outstanding Signed Photograph Of Roosevelt As President On Glacier Point, Yosemite; Signed And Inscribed On The Image: “to Conde Hamlin / With The Best Wishes / Of / Theodore Roosevelt”. "There can be nothing in the world more beautiful than the Yosemite, the groves of the giant sequoias... our people should see to it that they are preserved for their children and their children's children forever, with their majestic beauty all unmarred...” -Theodore Roosevelt The evocative photograph, showing a rugged-looking President Roosevelt in his hiking attire, was taken in May 1903 during his important tour of Yosemite with the great naturalist John Muir, a trip that would help convince Roosevelt for the need to preserve more public land: “Muir's popular writings caught the attention of President Theodore Roosevelt, who invited him camping in Yosemite. Roosevelt left behind reporters and his Secret Service agents for the company of two park rangers, an army packer, John Muir and the wild. They spent three days exploring meadows and waterfalls and three nights discussing conservation around campfires. One night, five inches of snow fell, and the president arose to white flakes on his blankets. Inspired by his trip with Muir, Roosevelt set aside more than 230 million acres of public land - an area bigger than the size of Texas - that included five national parks and 18 national monuments” (National Park Service). This photograph is taken from a stereograph by Underwood and Underwood, New York, the leading producer of stereographs at the time. The original stereograph, titled “Amidst America’s noblest scenery - President Roosevelt on Glacier Point Yosemite Valley, California”, is held at the Library of Congress. The recipient, Conde Hamlin (1861-1943), was (like Roosevelt) a native New Yorker. He spent his life in the newspaper business, ultimately serving as business manager for The New York Tribune. Size of photograph: 8x10 inches; matted and framed to an overall size of 14x16 inches. Silver print with luster (pearl) finish. Taken May 1903; printed c1904. Small crease on Roosevelt’s jacket (visible from the side); a little rippling at top edge; a hint of silvering at dark edges at bottom. A Rare Signed Photograph Showing Roosevelt The Outdoorsman And Documenting An Important Moment In The History Of National Conservation.
