1917 Original British Recruitment Rail Office Poster by Guy Lipscombe

About

This original World War I poster, an original color lithograph, depicts the British flag with the bold block text urging “Britishers Enlist To-Day”. The Hegeman Print, a New York publishing company, published the poster in 1917. Published at the start of United States involvement in World War I, the poster encourages British citizens living in the United States to enlist in the armed forces. The British Parliamentary Recruiting Committee issued a slightly different earlier version of this poster in June 1915 with the wording, “It’s Our Flag. Fight For It. Work For It.” This later “Britishers Enlist Today” version was created for release in the U. S. in 1917, but still incorporates the Union Jack in its design. The text and flag are supported on a dark green field. A blank rectangle of white was also sometimes incorporated, for local recruitment offices to print their address and phone numbers, so interested men knew where to enlist. This poster was designed by Guy Lipscombe (1881-1952), a British artist working out of London. Lipscombe headed the art department of the British weekly car magazine The Motor beginning in 1903. Lipscombe, who produced more than 40 covers for that magazine and for its rival Autocar, was also a war artist during the First World War. “Britishers Enlist To-Day” is one of his more well known recruitment poster designs, however Lipscombe also painted on the Italian front, many of which are now in the collection of London’s Imperial War Museum. The war ushered in the biggest advertising campaign to date, critical to the wartime communication needs of every combatant: from raising money, recruiting soldiers and boosting volunteer efforts, to spurring production and provoking outrage at enemy atrocities. The stark, colorful graphic designs, created by some of the nation’s leading artists, elicited strong emotions. The posters played to the fears, frustrations, and faith in freedoms that lingered in people's minds during the war. The United States alone produced about 2,500 poster designs and approximately 20 million posters, nearly 1 for every 4 citizens, in little more than 2 years.
