Citizen Kane, En Sensation

About

Original Swedish film poster. Martin scorsese has said that what makes Welles’s style so remarkable is its self-consciousness. For Citizen Kane, his first film, Welles was granted by RKO unlimited – and never to be repeated – creative authority. He took full advantage of it. To tell the story of a recalcitrant newspaper magnate, he deployed every narrative device and cinematic technique available: flashback, deep focus, high and low angle shots. These he reshuffled, reinvented, amplified, freeing the narrative from the convention of chronology and revolutionising the way a camera was used. Unlike the invisible Craft of someone like Howard Hawks, Welles’s authorship made its presence felt. The impact of Citizen Kane was both immediate and lasting. RKO could not handle the repercussions and wrested creative control from Welles for his subesquent films, most significantly the privilege of the final cut. Welles had aggressively confronted the norms of cinema, and his studio’s reaction, predictably, was to try desperately to rein him in. Many of those without a personal stake in the film, however, instantly recognized it as a revolutionary achievement. Especially in France, where Citizen Kane was first screened after World War II, critics were enthralled by its unprecedented audacity. Today, the film is considered a turning point: its innovations had a powerful, indelible effect on filmmakers all-over the world. Under the bizarre title En Sensation!, Citizen Kane was released in Sweden the same year as in the US. The poster, on the other hand, tries to convey all the essentials: using a characteristic Wellesian high angle perspective, it reveals Kane lurking under the canopy of the colossal Xanadu. This sharp angle directs the focus to Kane’s face and its enigmatically supercilious attitude. This rare Swedish poster is the only example that the gallery has ever seen.
