Jean Théophile Delaye is an artist and military topographer, and one of the first cartographers of modern Morocco. After the First World War, he was appointed to the Geographical Service of the Army, first in Tunisia then in Morocco in 1925. He spent his entire career there, with long periods in the Atlas where he carried out surveys necessary for the precise establishment of maps of this mountain range, from aerial photographs. In addition to his professional career, drawing and painting accompanied his life and activities from the 1920s. Geographer and topographer, he “saw” as a technician countries, landscapes, people, but he also “saw” as an artist with an immediate sense of each person's typical character, movement and color. He traveled on foot or on horseback and was not content with drawing up topographical surveys, he thus made very detailed drawings in pencil, charcoal, India ink, but also watercolors and gouaches of landscapes of mountains, valleys and kasbahs of southern Morocco, streets of the medina, characters, craftsmen at work, studies of costumes, jewelry and everyday objects, all of this has given rise to countless works, many of which have served to illustrate magazines and books. He was a member of French artists from 1930.
