EUGENE OGE (French. 1861-1936)
This poster is an advertisement for the liquor brand for Giffard Distilleries in Angers, (Loire Valley) France. The mint flavored liquor, La Menthe- Pastille, was first produced in 1885 by pharmacist, Emile Giffard and still exists today.
The poster was inspired by the Tribunal de la Haye: "Oge was great French political poster artist in late 19th and early 20th Century. Europe is on brink of World War One, and this poster is selling a refreshing liquor "Menthe Pastille." Oge is saying with great humor that drinking this refreshing and digestive liquor is solving all the political perils at The Hague Tribunal in the Netherlands where nations met to avoid disputes and political crises. Left to right: Kaiser Wilhelm II of German consoling beaten up Sultan of Turkey, King of Italy Victor Emanuel, Emperor Franz Joseph of Austro-Hungary, Crown Prince of Germany playing with little kings of Greece, Bulgaria and Serbia as marionettes, with Russian Czar Nicolas II, French President Poincare raising glass and King George V of England looking on holding one of his battleships." When unframed it was 62" x 46" - linen backed. It has been professionally framed behind acrylic - it has not been glued down. In the frame it measures 66" W x 50" L.

- Condition:Wear consistent with age and use. Minor fading. None of this is extremely noticeable, On poster, blemish above King George V shoulder, small white dot at bottom in "R" in liquor, a few stains in border. A few ripples. Slight scratches on lucite. One area on wood frame with small chip.
