About the Item

Original huge Art Deco poster printed in 1937 and designed by the artists Pierre and Jacques Bellenger. This original piece was printed by the stone lithographic technique, it has beautiful fresh colors and hasn't had any restoration. Although most people assume that this poster was the work of one designer, Pierre Bellenger, there were actually two. Pierre worked with his twin brother Jacques since they won a poster competition for the 1931 Paris colonial exhibition. (See the first letter of their signature, a P and B intertwined). Their work encompasses many outstanding art prints for prominent beverage and tobacco company. Formed with the Julian academy, the contest of posters of the colonial Exposure in 1928 marks the beginning of a long marked out career of creations of a very good level such Salamander, Godin, Dietrich (1936), Bally (1938). They collaborate with various editors: Chaix, Le´opold Orchard, Gossard, Damour, of Vasselais. 1966 mark the end of their common career of poster artist. They were very adept in finding a graphic means of conveying delight in the flavors of beverages and foods. Their sense of color balances greatly enhanced the impact of their posters, The Art Deco style name was derived from the Exposition Internationale des Arts De´coratifs et Industriels Modernes, held in Paris in 1925, where the style was first exhibited. Art Deco design represented modernism turned into fashion. Its products included both individually crafted luxury items and mass-produced wares, but, in either case, the intention was to create a sleek and antitraditional elegance that symbolized wealth and sophistication. The distinguishing features of the style are shapes that ares geometric or stylized from representational forms and crafted out of often expensive materials, which frequently include man-made substances in addition to natural ones (jade, silver, obsidian, chrome, and rock crystal). Though Art Deco objects were rarely mass-produced, the characteristic features of the style reflected admiration for the modernity of the machine and for the inherent design qualities of machine-made objects Decorative ideas came from American Indian, Egyptian, and early classical sources as well as from nature. Characteristic motifs included nude female figures, animals, foliage, and sunrays, all in conventionalized forms.
