Scarface

About the Item

This Original Argentine film poster is for the 1932 version of Scarface, the film was not released iargentina until the 194o's , this poster is for the films first release. Howard Hawks’s 1932 gangster extravaganza Scarface was part of the initial surge of gangster films that swept show business in the 1920s and 1930s. The Prohibition of the 1920s had created an extremely fertile environment for organized crime, which became concentrated in the hands of a few exceptionally ruthless and efficient businessmen who by the 1930s had attained legendary status. Always keen to respond to current public tastes, Hollywood was quick to capitalize on the glamorous appeal of these gang bosses by making a series of films inspired by real-life kingpins like Al Capone and Hymie Weiss. Producer Howard Hughes intended Scarface as the ultimate gangster film and prided himself on its unflinching depiction of the brutality of gang warfare. Despite its ambitious and careful production, its initial reception in the US proved something of a disaster. By unfortunate timing, its release coincided with an uptick in public disapproval of the gangster genre and what was considered, not unreasonably, to be its glorification of crime. Things became so problematic that the film had to be withdrawn from US circulation altogether. The film fared better internationally, especially in France, where critics and filmmakers alike were impressed by its rawness and its skillful use of a large variety of settings. Today Hawks’s Scarface is somewhat overshadowed by its 1983 remake starring Al Pacino, which is widely viewed as a classic in its own right. However, the original Scarface has been rehabilitated in the US and now enjoys widespread admiration for its first-rate acting and brazen energy. Gèleng’s poster makes powerful use of red and green’s complementary effect. Scarface’s menacing look is greatly enhanced by his bloodshot eyes, while his famous scar looks as stark and fresh as on the first day. It almost glows in the night, signaling the arrival of the most dangerous man in town. There are Fewer Than five known surviving examples of this poster known.
