About the Item

Antique English mezzotint after the French painting "La Poursuite" by Jean-Honore Fragonard (French, 1732-1806), giltwood surround. Published by Arthur Tooth & Sons, New Bond Street, London, 1910. Measures: 28" H x 20.5" W x 1" D framed; 15" H x 10" W sight FYI: The Progress of Love in the Heart of a Girl This project was begun in 1771 following an order from Madame du Barry, the last mistress of Louis XV. It consisted of four paintings entitled La Poursuite, La Surprise (The Meeting), The Crowned Lover and The Letter of Love and intended to be installed in the pavilion of Louveciennes in the lounge in cul-de-four. But some time after the installation, the paintings were rejected because they did not agree with the style of neoclassical architecture of the Pavilion. Thus, Fragonard kept all the pictures in his studio and brought back with him when he returned to Grasse, his hometown. He decided to install them in one of the rooms of his cousin's villa, but the walls were left empty after this installation, and Fragonard decided to paint more paintings to furnish the space. Biography: Jean-Honoré Fragonard (French: [?ã ono?e f?agon??]; 4 April 1732[2][3] – 22 August 1806) was a French painter and printmaker whose late Rococo manner was distinguished by remarkable facility, exuberance, and hedonism. One of the most prolific artists active in the last decades of the Ancien Régime, Fragonard produced more than 550 paintings (not counting drawings and etchings), of which only five are dated. Among his most popular works are genre paintings conveying an atmosphere of intimacy and veiled eroticism.
