Antique Print of the Ardenner or Ardainnes Horse by O. Eerelman, 1898

About the Item

The lithograph of the Ardennes Horse, part of the prestigious Dutch edition of "Paardenrassen Kunstalbum," is a magnificent representation of this enduring and powerful draft horse breed. Included in a luxurious portfolio of 41 lithographed plates, this specific print is derived from the original works of Otto Eerelman, an artist acclaimed for his vibrant and accurate depictions of various horse breeds. This print, showcasing the robustness and distinctive features of the Ardennes Horse, is produced on heavy textured paper, which not only adds a tactile dimension but also enhances the depth and richness of the artwork. The dimensions of the sheet and the image, each measuring 59 x 44.5 cm, are substantial, reflecting the grandeur and presence of the subject. Published by Schillemans & Van Belkum in Zutphen, the Netherlands, the "Paardenrassen Kunstalbum" began its release around 1898, likely in a serialized format of four prints per installment. This Dutch edition is noted for its exceptional quality and larger size relative to other language editions and subsequent facsimiles, making it a coveted item among collectors and horse enthusiasts. The lithographs were expertly produced by J.L. Goffart, a prominent Belgian lithographer, who skillfully captured the essence of Eerelman's paintings, bringing them to life in print form. Eerelman, initially focused on historical themes, later gained fame for his animal paintings, especially those depicting horses, earning him high-profile commissions including those from the Dutch Royal Family. The portfolio is enriched with descriptive texts by E.A.L. Quadekker, a military veterinarian and an expert author on equine subjects, providing valuable insight and context to the images. The Ardennes Horse lithograph, like the others in the collection, is considered among the finest artistic renditions of horse breeds, designed to appeal to the aristocracy and the well-informed. This edition of the "Paardenrassen Kunstalbum" stands as a testament to the beauty and strength of the Ardennes Horse. Due to its size and the need to maintain its quality, the lithograph is shipped flat, with additional shipping charges potentially applicable based on the delivery location.

  • “On the Moors” or "Dogging" Signed by Heywood Hardy, Antique Print, 1894
    By Heywood Hardy
    Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Presented is an 1894 signed first edition goupil-gravure print by Heywood Hardy (1842-1933). The engraving was printed in Paris and published by Boussod Valadon & Co. Publishers, the successors to Goupil & Co. Designed as a companion to After the Drive, Hardy’s On the Moors (Dogging) depicts three hunters and their two dogs hunting ducks. The youngest of the three men is shooting his gun as the dogs excitedly wait to chase after the bird. This print is one of only 75 artist’s proofs and has been signed by the artist in pencil at the lower left corner of the print’s margin. Hunting has a long history in England and is considered a very traditional activity even today. One of the most popular forms of hunting is called “wildfowling” and targets wild geese and ducks. Often conducted on coastal marshes, wildfowling is typically a solitary or small group sport unlike the grand group fox and pheasant hunts...
