About the Item
Beaver Dams on a Rocky Shore – 19th Century Canadian Wildlife Engraving
This charming 19th-century engraving offers a tranquil view of one of Canada’s most iconic animals in its natural habitat. Titled “Constructions des Castors” (Beaver Constructions), the scene depicts several beavers along the rocky shore of a river or lake, surrounded by rugged cliffs and dense forest. A prominent dam built from branches and logs can be seen in the center, stretching from the shoreline into the water, while one beaver stands upright in the foreground and others move across the muddy bank or wade into the water. The peaceful composition emphasizes both the industrious nature of these animals and the untamed beauty of the Canadian wilderness.
The plate is marked “Lemaitre direxit,” identifying it as the work of 19th-century French engraver Lemaitre. It was likely published around 1850 as part of a European visual compendium of Canadian life, geography, and culture. Unlike many other engravings in the same series that focus on cities or human settlements, this plate centers exclusively on wildlife and natural engineering, offering an early and respectful depiction of beavers in a landscape that is both realistic and evocative.
The beaver holds particular significance in Canadian history—not only as a symbol of industriousness and survival but also as the central figure in the fur trade that shaped much of North America's early colonial economy. The detailed rendering of the dam, the animals’ fur, and the surrounding textures of rock and water showcases the engraver’s technical skill and close observation.
Executed in steel engraving, the print exhibits the fine lines and subtle shading characteristic of the medium, ideal for portraying texture-rich scenes such as rocky outcrops, tree foliage, and the intricate structure of beaver dams.
Condition: Very good condition. Light toning and a few faint foxing spots in the margins. Minor creasing to upper edge, typical of plates removed from bound volumes. No tears or repairs. Strong impression on firm paper.
Framing tips: This naturalistic subject would pair beautifully with a rustic wood frame—oak or maple—and a warm cream or buff-colored mat. A forest green or natural brown inner border could echo the woodland theme while giving the print visual depth.
