This is your chance to acquire an original piece of Irish History from the dates when the events were actually occurring!! These are not to be confused with reprints. We will provide a "Certificate of Authenticity" with each piece sold. If you are Irish, Irish-American, Anglo-Irish or just a lover of all things historic then these prints are for you !! This scenes evoke powerful memories of the Great Irish Potato Famine, Irish Poverty and Irish Emigration during the 19th century. The sketch is not signed but was likely by A. O'Kelly and appeared in an ILN Edition in 1880. Many Irish Tenant Farmers were evicted from their rented cottages by Local Landlords due to their inability to pay rent or tithe to the Lord. Most Tenant Farmers rented their cottage on an average holding of no more than an acre, from their local Landlord. During the Great Famine (1845-52), due to the complete failure of the potato crop over a few years in a row, many tenant farmers could not afford to pay their rent and forcible evictions became commonplace. Over 1.5 Million people died of starvation and disease. Over 2.5 Million emigrated. The Irish economy took generations to recover. Left with quite literally 'nothing', many of these people decided to make the hazardous trans-Atlantic crossing, to start a new life in the New World (America). The term "Bog Trotter' is interesting, as this was a derogatory term used to describe rural country folk, living in Bogland or infertile areas. It implied that they were uneducated, ignorant and of low standing in society. It is was and still is used, as a derogatory term, today, between urban and rural dwellers in Ireland. It was used historically as a term to denigrate the Irish in Britain and by nativists in America.
