Norman Rockwell “The Young Artist” Framed Lithograph, Signed Artist’s Proof

About the Item

A large hand signed and numbered artist’s proof lithograph of “The Young Artist” by Norman Rockwell in original custom frame. Original oil painting was created for The Saturday Evening Post’s June 4, 1927, cover. Rockwell (b. 1894–1978) had a 47 year career with The Post that began in 1916, making this cover a relatively early one. Lithograph was made in the mid 1970s and is a less commonly reproduced work, especially as a signed artist’s proof edition of this size. Utterly charming scene depicts a smitten young artist—possibly Rockwell himself—mid-brush stroke as he paints a bright red heart under the declaration “She’s My Baby” on the back of his crush’s oversized duster. A very faithful and finely executed reproduction of the original, with rich coloration and crisp details. Signed in pencil by the artist at lower right, and numbered “A/P” at lower left. Atelier Ettinger, New York, printer’s chop at lower left corner. Arches 100% acid free paper with exposed deckled edge. Originally acquired from Lyon Art Gallery in San Francisco with custom two-color mat and brass finish aluminum frame, and retains their label on back. Sheet size is H 31.5 in. x W 23 in.; overall dimensions are listed below. Per page 41 of the 1972 book “Norman Rockwell: A Sixty Year Retrospective”, the original painting was—at the time of publication—in the collection of Mr. and Mrs. William M. Young, Jr. A complimentary softcover copy of said book will be included with purchase.

  • Herbert Laurence Davidson “Young Boy on Carousel”, Oil Painting, 1960s

A poignant 1960s oil painting on canvas depicting a young boy on a stationary carousel by important mid-century American artist Herbert Laurence Davidson (b. 1930–2018). A characteristically sensitive portrait by the artist, with his subject's red-eyed expression and dejected body language suggesting that there would be no more rides that day. With a well-earned reputation as a skilled American Realist, the short, finely hashed brushstroke technique that Davidson employs to achieve a detailed, luminous effect is all the more impressive upon closer examination. Signed "Herbert Davidson...
