Early 20th Century Original Colour Lithograph by Hans Thoma, Dated 1916

About

Hans Thoma (1839-1924) was a German painter / lithographer who studied art under Johann Schirmer at the Dusseldorf Art Academy and later in Paris with the great French realist painter Gustave Courbet. Hans Thoma was a member of the Academy of Munich and in 1899 became the Director of the Musuem & Academy of Carlsrhue. Hans Thoma was also highly influential in the development of the German / Austrian Symbolist Movement as well as in the German Expressionists period. Titled ‘Flieger’ (Flier) and dated 1916, this original allegorical color lithograph was executed during the period of the Great War and illustrates the perils of war as we observe the figures of Father Time and Death seated next to an hourglass as they patiently wait in the clouds for German airmen winging their way to their deaths. Printed on woven paper with full margins, signed & dated within the image, stamped title in the lower right margin, publishers stamp (unknown) in the bottom left margin. A bright and fine impression with slight traces of foxing in the outer margins. Set within four archival acid-free mats within a later silver-patinated frame. Sight dimensions: 15" high x 12" wide. Framed dimensions: 27" high x 23.75" wide x 1.25" deep. International clients are tax exempt on goods when shipped out of country.
