Gerard Dou " Die Dame am Putztische" Engraving 19th Century

About the Item

Charming engraving by Albert Henri Payne, after a painting by Gérard Dou, dating from 1667, "La femme à sa toilette" (The lady at her toilet). This engraving shows a woman getting ready, probably putting on her make-up. This first woman is sitting wearing a rather rich toilet, including a coat with fur. The interior of the house is richly decorated like a 17th century interior. Rich fabrics are present on the armchairs, the table etc. In the background there is a fireplace with mouldings, paintings hang on the walls. There are glass windows and a mirror. Albert Henri Payne was a 19th century steel engraver, painter and illustrator. He was originally from Britain, but eventually settled in Leipzig. This engraver is not well documented. Gerard Dou is a Dutch painter of the 17th century. His father was a stained glass manufacturer and he trained as an engraver. But he ended up studying painting and joined Rembrandt's studio. This is how he learned to master colours. He is mainly known for his small paintings. He specialised in genre scenes. He was much appreciated by the European sovereigns. He founded the school of fine painters in Leiden. Dimension : Paper : h : 11, 02 Inch w : 8,07 Inch View : h : 10,03 Inch w: 7,08 Inch frame : h : 17,1 Inch w : 12,9 Inch.

Humorous engraving typical of Flemish representations of the 17th century, representing two seated drinkers . Beautiful achievement typical of the Flemish school of the 17th century.
