Lithograph by Austrian Abstract Artist Helen Wolf
About the Item
Helen Wolf (Austrian/American 1912-Unknown) was educated in Vienna and continued her studies as a young girl in Prague before coming to the United States, where she became a citizen in 1950. Five years later she won the Huntington Hartford Foundation Fellowship and had the first showing of her paintings at Laguna Beach, California. The following year she exhibited in New York and progressed to several one-man exhibitions and national exhibitions in the United States.
She was a member of the Artists Equity, the National Association of Women Artists, Knickerbocker Artists, and the Art Students League to name a few.
Her style, reminiscent of Feininger, reflects her early training and culture. The cubist lines in "Lighthouse" provide us with a historical rarity of female artistry of that period.
This lithograph was printed in the early thirties by the "Associated American Artists," an art gallery and business established in 1934 in New York City. The gallery marketed art to the middle classes, first in the form of affordable prints and later in home furnishings and accessories, and played a significant role in the growth of art as an industry. The prints were sold as "art for the people" rather than "art for the wealthy." They were also marketed directly to the public via mail-order in magazines such as Time magazine and Reader's Digest.
In a strange reversal of its "market to the masses" philosophy, many early AAA prints which sold originally for $5 go to art collectors for thousands of dollars today. While the full edition number is unknown, it would be doubtul that they were large to begin with. Given a passing of 70+ years, there may be very few prints left in this pristine condition.
