Old Fish Print Named Opah, Cravo, Moonfish, Kingfish or Jerusalem Haddock, 1842

About the Item

Antique print, titled: 'Poissons Plate 10 - Le Lampris Tachete (Lampris guttatus).' - This rare plate shows the Lampris guttatus, commonly known as the opah, cravo, moonfish, kingfish, and Jerusalem haddock. From: 'Voyage en Islande et au Groenland' by M. Paul Gaimard, published in Paris 1842. Artists and Engravers: Made by 'H. Legrand' after 'Acaric Baron'. Paul Gaimard (1793-1858) served on board the Uranie under Freycinet during his circumnavigation of the world, and was partly responsible for the zoological studies published as a result of that voyage. He later served under Dumont d'Urville on board the Astrolabe during the La Perouse search expedition in 1826-1829. Gaimard's voyage to Iceland embarked in 1835 in search of the expedition of Jean de Blosseville from whom nothing had been heard since 1833. No trace was found, but the present work is the result of Gaimard's extensive travels through Iceland, and contains many fine views. Engraving with contemporary hand colouring on vellin (wove) paper.

Presented is an 1894 signed first edition goupil-gravure print by Heywood Hardy (1842-1933). The engraving was printed in Paris and published by Boussod Valadon & Co. Publishers, the successors to Goupil & Co. Designed as a companion to After the Drive, Hardy’s On the Moors (Dogging) depicts three hunters and their two dogs hunting ducks. The youngest of the three men is shooting his gun as the dogs excitedly wait to chase after the bird. This print is one of only 75 artist’s proofs and has been signed by the artist in pencil at the lower left corner of the print’s margin. Hunting has a long history in England and is considered a very traditional activity even today. One of the most popular forms of hunting is called “wildfowling” and targets wild geese and ducks. Often conducted on coastal marshes, wildfowling is typically a solitary or small group sport unlike the grand group fox and pheasant hunts...
