Pair of Mezzotint Engravings "Setters" & "Pointers" by William Ward, circa 1806

About the Item

A very fine pair of engraved mezzotints executed on paper by William Ward, the first is titled "Setters" after the original painting by George Moreland while the second is titled "Pointers" and is after the original painting by John Nost Sartorius. The first depicts setters after having caught a scent along a woodland path. The work is noted along the bottom edge as being after Moreland and "Published June 15th 1806 by James Linnell 2, Streatham Street, Charlotte Street, Bloomsbury". In the lower right it notes "Engraved by Wm. Ward, Engraver to H.R.H. the Duke of York". This engraving is depicted in George Dawe's "Life of George Moreland". The second is a mezzotint of two pointers that have alerted on possible game in the distance. It was executed after the painting by John Nost Sartorius (English, 1759-1828). This too is noted along the bottom "POINTERS. London, Published June 16th 1806 by James Linnell No. 2, Streatham Street, Bloomsbury". In block script it is lettered bottom left "T N Sartorious" and bottom right "Engraved by W. Ward, Engraver to H.R.H. the Duke of York." Both excellent selections, "Setters" engravings are held in the permanent collection of the Yale Center for British Art (acc. no. B1985.36.724) as well as The British Museum (acc. no. 1872,0511.220); "Pointers" is also held in the permanent collection of The British Museum. They are housed in beautiful ebonized frames under museum glass. Measurements: 18 3/4" H x 21" W x 1" D.

Wear consistent with age and use. Moderate foxing to borders of "Setters" with minor overall toning to the paper; "Pointers" with some moderate old creases; both are professionally framed and housed under museum glass, frames with some minor surface wear.
