Sally Morgan Signed Australian Aboriginal Art Limited Edition Print Home Country

About the Item

A wonderful work by Australian Aboriginal author/artist/ activist/dramatist Sally Morgan (1951- ) titled "Home Country", perhaps inspired by one of her numerous novels. The silkscreen print is hand signed in pencil by Sally Morgan (and another artist so perhaps this was done in collaboration), dated (1988), titled, numbered (4/85), and blind stamped/embossed artist's mark. This piece, along with three others we acquired, is from the famed Kelton Foundation Collection of important Australian Indigenous Works of Art. The Kelton Foundation is located in Santa Monica, California. Provenance: Lawsons, Works on Paper, Contemporary Pictures, and Studio Ceramics, Sydney, June 1998 Sally Morgan is one of Australia's best-known Aboriginal artists and writers. Her family was part of the Stolen Generation and she grew up in Perth, unaware of her Aboriginal heritage. Morgan was led to believe that she was of Indian descent until the age of 15 at which time she discovered her indigenous Aboriginal heritage (her family belongs to the Palku and Nyamal peoples of the Pilbara). This experience of having her origins hidden from her and her subsequent quest for identity served as her inspiration for her 1987 autobiography, My Place. Morgan's works are on display in numerous private and public collections both internationally and in her homeland Australia including: Robert Holmes à Court collection Dobell Foundation Australian National Gallery Muscarelle Museum of Art Her numerous awards include: 1987 – Human Rights Literature and Other Writing Award for My Place 1989 – Human Rights Literature and Other Writing Award for Wanamurraganya, the story of Jack McPhee 1990 – Winner, Order of Australia Book Prize 1993 – Joint winner Fremantle Print Award with Bevan Honey 1998 – Notable Book, Children's Book Council 2012 – Notable Book, Children's Book Council of Australia. Frame dimensions: 24" high, 18.5" wide, 1" deep Viewable art: 12.75" x 10.75".
