About the Item
Village of Cedars and Quebec Citadel – Pair of 19th Century Canadian Views
This atmospheric pair of antique steel engravings offers a vivid look at two distinct yet historically significant Canadian locations in the 19th century: the peaceful riverside Village of Cedars and the imposing Citadel of Quebec. Both engravings were made by Lemaitre and published in France around 1850 as part of a visual record of Canadian architecture, industry, and landscapes.
The first print, titled “Fleuve St-Laurent et Village de Cèdres,” depicts the quiet settlement of Cedars along the St. Lawrence River. In the foreground, sailing barges and timber rafts float along the broad river, emphasizing the region’s economic reliance on transportation and logging. The village appears modest and peaceful, with a central church featuring a tall spire and several clustered houses and outbuildings. To the left stands a weathered crucifix beside a wooden fence, while tree-lined banks and distant rooftops complete the pastoral composition. The engraving captures both the spiritual and rural essence of life along the river.
The second print, “Citadelle de Québec,” presents a dramatic view of the Citadel of Quebec, perched atop Cap Diamant and overlooking the river. The foreground shows men working logs along the shore—likely timbermen preparing wood for shipment—illustrating the industrial labor that supported Quebec’s economy. In the background, the massive stone ramparts of the citadel rise above clustered colonial buildings and a tall obelisk monument. A cross-topped chapel and a French flag emphasize both religious and national identity. Sailing ships fill the bay, underscoring Quebec’s strategic and commercial importance during the colonial era.
Both engravings are executed in the steel engraving technique, valued for its precision and tonal depth. The crisp architectural details, expressive skies, and natural textures reflect the engraver’s technical mastery and documentary intent.
Condition: Good condition with light, even toning and a few minor foxing spots. Margins are clean with slight edge wear from binding removal. The impressions are strong and detailed on both prints.
Framing tips: These contrasting scenes—rural serenity and military might—would pair well when framed together. Use matching dark wood frames with warm ivory or beige mats. An inner mat in slate gray or pine green could complement both the natural elements and historic subject matter.
