Flemish Hand-Woven "Feuilles De Choux" Tapestry, Silk and Wool

About the Item

Provenance: Bruges or Enghien, Mid-16th Century. Tapestry wool and silk texture Dimensions 225 x 190cm Extremely rare piece In excellent condition Washed and lined. This Flemish tapestry "with large cabbage leaves" was woven with mainly green , but also red and pink yarns. It is very rare both for its small size, it is in fact complete with its borders, and for the atypical decorative system compared to the Flemish "Feuilles De Choux" tapestries. The decoration of the central area has very large, well-defined leaves, adorned with beautiful flowers and well-marked fruits. You can notice a realistic snail, a beautiful butterfly, a bird enjoying the scene. It seems that this is represented by observing a limited area of ??these leaves closely or with a magnifying glass. A small red frame above and below, a vertical rose one to the right and left, better defines the area represented. To complete the tapestry, a large frame, in pinkish red, with a festoon decoration and protagonist like the central field. From below, two vases can be seen at sides, from which festoons of leaves and fruits depart upwards, interspersed with bunches of white flowers. Nothing to do therefore with the typical "feuille de choux" tapestries described and classified by literature experts and seen in major exhibitions.
