19th Century France Needle Point Hand-Knotted Wool and Silk Red Gold Tapestry

About the Item

Needle Point embroidery, a variant of the cross-stitch, was a widespread activity throughout Europe, which since the Middle Ages was engaged by court ladies and nuns in convents. It took hours and hours of work to create precious artifacts, destined to be used in civil and religious ceremonies or to be offered as a gift to foreign guests. From the 16th century, small, needle point carpets were also made in Central-Europe and Great Britain, destined to be used as tabletop. Initially, the drawings were inspired by the classical motifs of oriental knotted carpets, especially those of Anatolian, but then progressively took over new ornaments linked to Western and Christian culture. Today can be used as a wall panel, was born as a table mat, or perhaps, as the monogram in the corners might suggest, an altar carpet, made for a wedding, is a particularly rare example because It is embroidered with mixed technique in small and a half stitch and It was made with wool and silk.
