16th Century Flemish Tapestry

About the Item

A magnificent Biblical tapestry in wool and silk likely made in the Flemish weaving center of Oudenaarde. With a history of tapestry production dating to 1368, the city created some of the finest tapestries of late Medieval and Renaissance Europe that were widely sought after across the continent. The 16th century, when this piece was woven, is considered Oudenaarde's golden age of design. After a decree under Charles V on May 16th 1544, compulsory trademarking of Oudenaarde-made pieces was enacted. This unmarked tapestry would suggest its creation prior to this date in the first half of the 16th century. Rendered in striking blue, green, and gold thread, the tapestry with its surrounding border tells the story of the beautiful Queen Esther pictured to the right of King Ahasuerus with royal vizier Haman to his right pleading for his life after his plot to destroy the Hebrew people was uncovered. Subsequently Haman himself is sentenced to death and the Jewish nation saved. This deliverance is celebrated today in the Feast of Purim.
