Aubusson Tapestry "The Banquet of the Pacha", France, 19th Century

About the Item

Beautiful wool and silk tapestry representing a banquet of a Pasha. While the guests eat, servants bring the dishes and musicians entertain the assembly. Tapestries were used to richly decorate a house and keep the heat inside a room by diminishing the cold radiation of the stones. It could be quickly and easily disassembled to be transported to another house. From a millefleurs decor at the beginning of the art of tapestry, the weavers have managed to increase the woven surfaces allowing the narrative unfolding of a story (biblical, mythological or literary stories) through hangings, set of tapestries on the same subject. The origins of Aubusson tapestry still remain uncertain, although some attribute its invention to Saracens who settled on the banks of the Creuse after their defeat at Poitiers in 732, while others believe it to be the fact that Louis 1st of Bourbon would have encouraged Flemish upholsterers to come and settle in the hollow. At the beginning the weavers were interested in tapestries with greenery. And then they begin to produce hunting scenes, for example: unicorn, wolf, lion, wild boar, deer hunting. they also begin to take an interest in religious scenes. Over time, drawing inspiration from Felletin (a small town in the upper Creuse valley which hosted the first workshops in the region), Aubusson became the world capital of tapestry. The weavers used sheep's wool as a support for the tapestry. Thanks to their dexterity, they managed to establish a considerable collection in a center in Aubusson but whose elements are scattered all over the world. One can quote for example the largest tapestries of the world which embellish the cathedral of Coventry, the opera of Sydney and airports in Arabia, were all woven in Aubusson or Felletin. The headquarters of Unesco in Paris, the liner France, and many other equally prestigious places are added to the long list.
