Early 19th Century French Wall Hanging Handwoven Aubusson Tapestry
About the Item
This colorful, antique tapestry was hand woven in Aubusson, France, circa 1820. The wall hanging piece depicts a woman feeding a bowl of soup to a youngster; the art work is embellished with a trompe l'oeil Baroque framed woven border around the composition. The tapestry is signed on the bottom right with the initials D.LE. The piece is in good condition commensurate with age and use, with an interesting scene and rich colors in a red, green and beige palette. There's a new canvas backing and the fringe trim at the bottom can easily be removed.
Aubusson, a town on the river Creuse in central France, became a center of tapestry manufacture in the 17th and 18th centuries during the reigns of Louis XIV and Louis XV; Aubusson became the source for the aristocracy, hence the typically monumental sizes of Aubusson rugs and tapestries. Employing a method known as "warping" and executed on a low horizontal loom, the weavers of Aubusson were able to create an illusion of depth in their works. Aubusson textiles are also usually identified by their stylized framing motifs and neoclassical themes.

- Antique 19th Century French Aubusson Tapestry, Handmade, Wall Hanging, Silk FineLocated in Port Washington, NYThe Aubusson tapestry manufacture of the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries managed to compete with the royal manufacture of Gobelins tapestry and the privileged position of Beauvais tapestry. Tapestry manufacture at Aubusson, in the upper valley of the Creuse in central France, may have developed from looms in isolated family workshops established by Flemings that are noted in documents from the 16th century. Typically, Aubusson tapestries depended on engravings as a design source or the full-scale cartoons from which the low-warp tapestry-weavers worked. As with Flemish and Parisian tapestries...Category
