Antique Greek Island Ottoman Silk Embroidery

About the Item

Carefully worked in fine silk, this outstanding Greek Island embroidery is decorated by a horizontal repeat of Directional floral devices containing tulips and hyacinths, which are among the favoured motifs by the ottoman court. Embroideries of this type were commissioned by the court to the Provincial ottoman regions of the Dodecanese Islands, where the tradition of silk embroidery was consolidated since the Middle Ages. The textile is mounted on a wooden stretcher.
