About the Item

Helen Webber's lion tapestry employs her signature layered appliqué method, cutting and assembling textiles of varying weave patterns, weights, and surface textures to build dimensional relief across the picture plane. The composition depicts a stylized lion amid botanical elements — irises, tulips, and a textured tree trunk — set against a layered background of green foliage and a taupe ground. Fabric types visible across the surface include smooth, velvet-adjacent panels, open-weave sections, and dense woven grounds, each contributing to the sculptural quality Webber pursued throughout her career. A neutral taupe border frames the work. Signed lower left and numbered 9/50. Webber was a central figure in the American fiber art movement of the 1960s and 70s, a period when textile artists challenged the boundary between craft and fine art. Her work was distinguished by its painterly approach to cloth — using fabric the way painters use pigment, building form and depth through layering rather than drawing or weaving pictorial images in a single plane.
