About the Item

This Flemish 18th century tapestry offers a romantic composition of the history of Io and Zeus. A scenic perspective built on the basis of a monumental stairway emphasizes this Greek mythological picture. A beautiful harmony of forms and blue, red, grey and brown colors dominates this very sophisticated tapestry protected by an Olympian eagle, representing Zeus. Io was a young princess of the royal race of Argos Zeus felt in love with. As soon as Hera noticed, she became suspicious and jealous. As she came down from the Mount Olympus, Zeus transformed Io into a soft white heifer dressed in spread garlands of flowers. Hera faked liking this cow so much she wanted to have it as a present. Zeus presented her the cow. Hera arranged Argus to watch over it for he had hundred eyes. Zeus joined Io at times under the form of a bull and took pity of his mistress. He sent Hermes to fetch Io. Once he was asleep, Hermes killed Argus with his caduceus. Hera took his eyes and set them in the tail of her favorite bird, the peacock. Io roamed near Mycenes. Everywhere she passed, plants and new flowers sprang from earth for her. Then Io dashed through Greece, Asia and ran away to Egypt where she was very welcomed. Reaching the Nile, Zeus restored her human form. Io bore a child, the son of Zeus, Epaphos, and reigned over Egypt, where she was beloved under the name of Isis.
