Late 17th Century French Aubusson Mythological Tapestry, Judgement of Paris

About the Item

A French Aubusson mythological tapestry from the late 17th century, depicting the Judgment of Paris. In this famous scene, the handsome young man, Paris, seated at left, is chosen by the powerful deity, Zeus, to determine which of the three female deities is the most beautiful, Aphrodite (the goddess of love, at left with a cherub), Hera (the queen of the goddesses, and Zeus’s sister-wife, at center), and Athena (the goddess of war, in armor at right). Paris was unsure which of the three deities to select, and to whom to give the golden apple signifying victory. He was also enraptured by the most beautiful mortal woman of his time, Helen of Troy. Aphrodite, wanting to be the winner of the beauty contest between the three goddesses, convinced Paris that she would use her powers to help him seduce Helen of Troy. Paris thus chose Aphrodite to be the most beautiful, and she in turn helped him win the love of Helen of Troy, which would ultimately begin the Trojan War. The scene presented here depicts Paris giving the apple to Aphrodite, signaling her victory in the beauty contest. Wool with silk inlay. Excellent condition. Measures: 8’0” H x 7’5” W. Hanging: The tapestry comes ready for hanging, with linen backing and a strip of hook and loop tape at the top end, which can be connected to the opposite side of the supplied hook and loop tape, which could be tacked to your wall. For those who prefer the use of a tapestry rod, we can add the appropriate size loops to accommodate your needs.
