Allegorical Pair of Faience de Rouen Busts Depicting Summer and Fall

About the Item

Two Faience de Rouen busts on plinths spuriously inscribed "Fait a Rouen 1647" and blue fleur-de-lys marks after original models made in Circa 1730 by Nicholas Fouquay ( 1686 - 1742) located in the Departement des Objets D'Art in the Louvre; the busts are emblematic of the Seasons, represented here Summer, the goddess Ceres in floral patterned drapery with flowers and wheat sheaves adorning her tresses, and Fall represented as Bacchus the God of wine crowned by grapes. Each has its own original wall mounted grotesque mask plinth. These busts and plinths were likely made by the French Porcelain and Ceramics factory Samson in the last quarter of the 19th century.
