Antique Danish 1841 Mangle Board Wedding Love Gift Colorful Hand-Carved Wood

About the Item

Antique Danish or Scandinavian mangle board (clothing and bedding press) dated 1941. It has this text cut into it: KM JDR 1841 and a short text painted on both sides of the handle. If pieces could talk … It is made from oak wood and richly decorated with hand-carved abstract geometric blossoms and painted with many colors. The colors are quite well-preserved. The wooden mangle board has a long tradition in Europe and especially in the Scandinavian countries. It goes back to at least the mid 15th century. In the 17th century you find more richly decorated mangle boards and painted with one to three colors. They now became a courtship gift offered by the man to his bride-to-be prior to the wedding day. The production of mangle boards peaked at the end of the 18th century. This mangle board is in a good antique condition with normal signs from age and use and it has a beautiful patina. It still wears quite a lot of its original paint. There are the usual tiny holes from borers. Measurements Height: 62,5 cm (24.61") Width: 13,3 cm to 16 cm (5.24"" to 6.30") Depth: 10,5 cm (4.13")
