Carrara Marble Bas Relief Of Saint Jerome
About the Item
This is a Carrara Marble Bas-Relief of a Religious Scene. It depicts an old man with a long beard and a bare chest, but wearing a tunic knelt down looking up to a crucified of Jesus Christ who is in front of a deciduous tree. He has a halo around his head and is holding a rock in his right hand. There is a small lion laying down in the floor at the left side. An open book is at the bottom of the tree. The old man is Saint Jerome who is the patron saint of the librarians, encyclopedists and translator. He translated the Bible to Latin and it is called the Vulgate. He prayed a lot in front of the crucifix asking God for mercy and eternal life for his friends, family and himself. He is also known for his bad temper, so he always carried a stone in his hand to beat his chest with it to atone for his sins especially the ones related to anger. The lion near him symbolizes the truth that God works to bring all his creatures into peace. There is a legend about how he met the lion while he was in the dessert.
