Crucifix by Georges Jouve

Made between 1942 and 1944, this crucifix is a very early piece from one of France's greatest ceramists. In 1942, Jouve had just escaped from Nazi imprisonment, and was hiding out in Provence, in an old potter's village. This was a ceramics-making center since antiquity, and inspired by local traditions, Jouve began to make ceramic sculptures. Most of these were of religious subjects, as of course this ceramic crucifix is. A beautiful modernist interpretation of Christ on the Cross, rendered in a stylized demi-relief, and covered with Jouve's famous satin black glaze, it was created while Europe was suffering under the grip of a very violent World War. This crucifix demonstrates Jouve's sophisticated grasp of the aesthetic, the spiritual, and the emotional dimensions of religious iconography. Jouve's expressive and personal representation of the central image of Christianity, which manages to appear both modern and ancient at the same time, is quite powerful, and goes a long way to explain how regard for his work grew throughout France, especially in faraway Paris. Fully signed on reverse, with Jouve's signature and his "Apollon" device. This piece is easily hung on a wall; a hole for that purpose was placed by Jouve at the top of the cross, above the "INRI" inscription.
