"Germany Triumphing Over the Soviets," Propaganda Bas Relief Sculpture, Meissen
$3,500

About
Rare and fascinating, this allegorical plaque depicts a nude, strong Germany triumphing over a bearded savage, representing the Soviet Union, who is holding -- of course -- a Hammer in one hand and a sickle in the other. The Soviet's Hammer is also encircled by a group of twisting snakes, which are reaching out toward the German figure without effect. The sculptor was Erich Oehme, who is largely known as an animalier, but in this case was commissioned to create a sculpture for propaganda purposes. The plaque was executed by the famed Meissen Porcelain works, using a ruddy brown finish for the sculpture.
